The Only Way To Store Cherries So They Last, According To Experts

Cherries are a delightful and nutritious treat, but their short shelf life can make it challenging to enjoy them for an extended period. Proper storage is crucial to maintain their freshness and flavor. 

Start by selecting the freshest cherries available. Look for firm, plump cherries with bright, glossy skin and green, pliable stems. Avoid cherries with bruises, wrinkles, or soft spots, as these are signs of decay.  

Moisture is one of the main enemies of cherry preservation. Washing cherries before storing them introduces excess moisture, which can lead to mold growth and faster spoilage. Instead, wait to rinse cherries until just before you eat them.  

Cherries are highly perishable and should be stored in the refrigerator immediately after purchase. Keep them in a breathable container or perforated plastic bag to allow proper air circulation. 

If using a plastic bag, make small holes to reduce condensation and prevent mold. Avoid sealing cherries in airtight bags, as lack of airflow can accelerate deterioration. 

Line the bottom of your storage container with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Lay the cherries in a single layer if possible to minimize pressure and bruising. If layering is unavoidable, place another paper towel between layers for added protection. 

If you have more cherries than you can consume within a week, freezing is an excellent option. To freeze, wash and dry the cherries thoroughly. Remove the stems and pits if desired, then spread them on a baking sheet in a single layer.  

Once frozen, transfer the cherries to an airtight container or freezer bag. Frozen cherries can last up to a year and are perfect for smoothies, baking, or snacking.
