The 1885-S Liberty Head Double Eagle ($20 gold coin) is a San Francisco Mint issue from the long-running Liberty Head series (1850–1907).
While not considered a key date, it is still a desirable coin due to its gold content and historical significance.
Obverse: Features Lady Liberty’s left-facing profile, designed by James B. Longacre, with a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY" and surrounded by 13 stars.
Reverse: Displays a heraldic bald eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest and “IN GOD WE TRUST” above.
Some coins exhibit weak strikes or bag marks, common for gold coins of this period.
Best value is in AU and lower MS grades—higher grades are rare and command a premium.
Struck in the California Gold Rush era, when San Francisco played a key role in gold coin production.
Many 1885-S Double Eagles were shipped overseas, explaining why some Mint State examples exist today.
