The Fort McHenry quarter honors the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Maryland, best known as the site that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the War of 1812.

Fort McHenry played a crucial role in defending Baltimore Harbor from the British attack on September 13-14, 1814.
