Pushups are a simple yet effective exercise that tests upper body strength and endurance, but how many you should be able to perform can depend significantly on your age and fitness level.  

For individuals in their 20s, the average benchmark for men is around 22-28 pushups in one set, while women in this age group might aim for 15-20 pushups.  

As people progress into their 30s, these numbers typically drop slightly due to natural declines in muscle mass and overall strength, with men aiming for 17-21 pushups and women around 12-17. 

In their 40s, men might target 13-16 pushups and women 8-12, reflecting the importance of maintaining a consistent fitness routine to counteract age-related changes.  

By the time individuals reach their 50s and 60s, pushup capacity can decline further, with men aiming for 10-14 pushups and women 5-10, although staying active can significantly slow this decline.  

For those over 70, even being able to perform a handful of pushups is a commendable goal, showcasing functional strength and endurance. These numbers aren’t strict rules but rather guidelines based on average fitness levels for each age group. 

Factors such as overall health, weight, body composition, and fitness history play a significant role in determining how many pushups you can or should perform.
