Can You Eat Brown Avocado?

Yes, you can eat brown avocado in most cases, but it depends on why the avocado has turned brown. When an avocado's flesh is exposed to air, it undergoes oxidation, a natural process that causes browning.  

This change in color does not necessarily mean the avocado has gone bad, and it is generally safe to eat if the fruit still smells fresh and has a creamy texture.  

However, if the browning is accompanied by a sour smell, mold, or a slimy texture, it’s better to discard it as these are signs of spoilage.  

Browning due to oxidation is primarily a cosmetic issue and does not significantly affect the taste or nutritional value, though the flavor may become slightly bitter. 

Avocado browning can also occur when the fruit is overripe. An overripe avocado may have brown or black streaks running through the flesh, which might indicate internal bruising.  

If these areas are isolated and the rest of the avocado is green and smells normal, you can cut away the browned portions and eat the rest.  

However, if the entire fruit has turned mushy and has an off-putting odor, it is best to avoid eating it. Similarly, mold on the skin or flesh is a clear indication that the avocado is unsafe to consume. 

To minimize browning, you can store cut avocados properly. Covering the exposed surface with plastic wrap, squeezing lemon or lime juice over it, or storing it with a slice of onion can slow down oxidation.
