Error Coins: The Top 5 Most Valuable U.S. Minting Mistake

Error coins are among the most exciting finds for collectors, and some of the rarest and most valuable ones are U.S. minting mistakes.

These coins were produced with errors during the minting process, making them unique and highly sought after.

One of the most famous examples is the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. Only five of these coins are known to exist, and their value has soared into the millions due to their rarity and historical significance.

Another valuable error is the 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter with an extra leaf on the corn stalk. This was caused by a die error, and only a few coins with the extra leaf were released into circulation, making it one of the most prized modern error coins.

The 1955 Double Die Lincoln Cent is another prime example, where the coin was struck twice, causing a noticeable doubling of the date and inscription.

This coin is highly coveted by collectors, and its value has increased significantly over the years. The 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo Nickel, which was minted due to a die malfunction, is another error coin that commands a premium.

The third leg of the buffalo was partially worn off, giving the appearance that the buffalo had only three legs. Finally, the 1804 Silver Dollar, known as the "King of U.S. Coins," is considered a major error.

Though no 1804 dollars were originally minted in that year, the coins were struck later for presentation purposes, and their unique history and the fact that only a handful exist make them some of the most valuable error coins.
