Growing garlic at home is a rewarding and straightforward process that ensures a fresh supply of this flavorful and health-boosting ingredient.
To achieve a bountiful harvest, start by selecting high-quality garlic bulbs, preferably organic or from a trusted supplier, as store-bought garlic is often treated to prevent sprouting.
Garlic thrives in cool weather, so plant cloves in the fall, about four to six weeks before the ground freezes, allowing roots to establish before winter dormancy.
Break the bulb into individual cloves, ensuring the largest and healthiest ones are used, and plant them pointed-side up about two inches deep and four to six inches apart.
Mulching with straw or leaves helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect cloves during winter. As garlic grows, ensure consistent watering, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
