– Hidden Treasures: Rare U.S. Coins Still in Circulation Today
–
Many people believe that all rare and valuable coins are locked away in collections, but surprisingly, some are still in circulation today.
These hidden treasures can turn up in pocket change, bank rolls, or even as change from a store purchase.
Among the most sought-after are the 1943 Lincoln Steel Cent, mistakenly struck in copper instead of steel, which can be worth thousands of dollars.
Similarly, the 1969-S Lincoln Cent with a doubled die obverse is highly valuable due to its striking error, making each well-preserved example a small fortune.
Quarters and dimes from 1964 or earlier, made of 90% silver, are also still found occasionally and are worth more than their face value due to their silver content.
The 1982 and 1983 Washington Quarters in uncirculated condition are worth more because no official mint sets were produced that year, making high-quality examples rare.
Another exciting find is the 1999-W Delaware Quarter, an experimental issue with a West Point mintmark, which is extremely difficult to locate but worth a significant premium.
Even modern coins like the 2004-D Wisconsin Quarter with an extra leaf on the ear of corn can command high prices from collectors.
