Next, examine the stalks, as they play a crucial role in the overall quality of the broccoli. The stalks should be thick, firm, and free of wrinkles.  

A thinner stalk can sometimes indicate that the broccoli has been harvested too early, while a dry or woody stalk often points to over-maturity. If the stalks feel tough when squeezed or bent, it’s best to avoid that bunch.
