How to Cut an Avocado

Cutting an avocado is simple, but doing it safely and efficiently ensures you can enjoy the fruit without any mess or injury. Start by washing the avocado thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or potential bacteria from the surface.

Once clean, place the avocado on a cutting board and stabilize it with one hand. Using a sharp knife, slice into the avocado lengthwise until the blade meets the pit.

Carefully rotate the avocado while keeping the knife steady, cutting around the pit to create two halves. Twist the two halves in opposite directions to separate them.

To remove the pit, use caution. You can gently tap the pit with the blade of the knife so it embeds slightly, then twist the knife to lift the pit out.

Alternatively, use a spoon to scoop out the pit if you’re uncomfortable using a knife. Once the pit is removed, you can scoop out the flesh or slice it within the skin.

To scoop, use a spoon to run along the edges where the flesh meets the skin, releasing the soft interior in one smooth motion. For slicing, gently cut the flesh into strips or cubes while it is still inside the skin, being careful not to cut through to your hand.

After cutting, use the avocado immediately to prevent it from browning. If you need to store it, sprinkle the exposed flesh with lemon or lime juice and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap to minimize air exposure.

Proper cutting and storage help preserve the avocado’s flavor and texture, ensuring it stays fresh for your recipe or snack.
