A key step is avoiding foods that contribute to the buildup of plaque, primarily caused by high levels of saturated fats, trans fats, sugar, and sodium. 

Fried foods like French fries and fried chicken are high in trans fats, which increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower good cholesterol (HDL), accelerating arterial plaque formation.
