Whether you’ve picked them fresh from a bog or purchased them from the store, handling cranberries correctly ensures they stay fresh and flavorful for weeks or even months.
Start by inspecting your cranberries for quality. Remove any soft, shriveled, or damaged berries, as these can spoil more quickly and affect the others. Healthy cranberries are firm, plump, and brightly colored.
After sorting, do not wash the cranberries unless you plan to use them immediately. Excess moisture can encourage mold growth, reducing their shelf life.
Store unwashed cranberries in their original packaging or transfer them to a breathable container, such as a perforated plastic bag, to allow proper air circulation.
Place the container in the refrigerator's crisper drawer, where the berries can stay fresh for up to three to four weeks. The cool and humid environment in the crisper drawer is ideal for maintaining their quality.
